This two phase scheme involved the conversion of two, grade ll listed buildings and a substantial new build extension to the rear. The original victorian villa known as ‘The Elms’ was converted into 7 student flats in phase l, and the neighbouring property at 5a was converted to provide, along with the rear extension, an additional 29 rooms in phase ll. The listing of the existing properties required extensive consultation with Historic England and local conservation officers.
The extension was planned to fit within the rear of the site, once an orchard garden. The new building was designed to gently curve leading the eye deeper into the site. The blue fins deepen in hue along the length of the building to further assist in drawing the eye. The building is then viewed through the garden which includes a number of fruit trees acknowledging its history as an orchard.
