The site is ‘L’shaped in form and part of the site bid proposal was to retain the open space facing existing properties on Third Avenue and creating an improved outlook for them. This took the form of a ‘pocket park’ to provide a welcome green oasis in a densely built area. The natural orientation of the plots fronting Kilnyard Road allowed rear gardens to be south-east facing providing maximum sunlight for most of the day.
The houses are simple in form and traditionally constructed in load-bearing blockwork with render finish and pitched roofs. Windows are split into panels of two or three giving a vertical emphasis to the window and are set back in reveals to provide shadow details. A simple canopy is provided over front doors to give shelter. Windows and external doors have stone heads and sills to provide interest and detail to the elevations. Walls are rendered in through coloured textured white render which gives a bright and contemporary appearance to the development.
